Adenoidectomy

Adenoidectomy is a surgical procedure performed to remove the adenoids — a mass of lymphatic tissue located behind the nose, above the roof of the mouth. While adenoids help fight infections in early childhood, they often shrink as a child grows. In some cases, however, the adenoids become chronically enlarged or infected, causing problems that require surgical removal.

Common indications for adenoidectomy include chronic nasal blockage, recurrent ear infections, sleep disturbances (like snoring or sleep apnea), mouth breathing, and frequent sinus infections. Children may experience difficulty breathing through the nose, persistent nasal speech, or trouble sleeping due to blocked airways.

The procedure is usually done under general anesthesia and takes about 20 to 30 minutes. It’s often performed along with tonsillectomy or grommet insertion, depending on the child’s symptoms. Adenoidectomy is done through the mouth, so there are no external incisions or visible scars.

Recovery is typically quick, with most children resuming normal activities within a week. Pain is usually mild and can be managed with medications. Proper hydration and a soft diet are recommended for a few days post-surgery.

At our center, Dr. Abhishek S. uses modern techniques for safe, precise, and minimally traumatic adenoid removal. The goal is to relieve airway obstruction, reduce infections, and improve overall quality of life — especially sleep, breathing, and speech.

Adenoidectomy is a highly effective and commonly performed procedure, offering lasting relief for children suffering from chronic ENT issues related to enlarged adenoids.

Tonsillectomy

Tonsillectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the tonsils — two oval-shaped lymphoid tissues located at the back of the throat. While tonsils help protect against infections in early childhood, they can sometimes become more of a problem than a benefit, especially when they become chronically infected, enlarged, or cause sleep-related breathing disorders.

The most common reasons for performing a tonsillectomy include recurrent tonsillitis, enlarged tonsils causing snoring or obstructive sleep apnea, chronic sore throat, difficulty swallowing, or peritonsillar abscess. In some cases, it is also done when the tonsils harbor pus or act as a source of infection that affects other areas like the ears or sinuses.

Tonsillectomy is usually performed under general anesthesia and takes about 30–45 minutes. The procedure is done through the mouth, leaving no external cuts or scars. Various techniques like cold dissection, coblation, or electrocautery may be used, depending on the surgeon’s preference and the patient’s condition.

Postoperative care includes hydration, soft diet, adequate rest, and pain management. Some discomfort in the throat, ears, or neck is common for a few days. Recovery typically takes 7 to 10 days.

At our center, Dr. Abhishek S. ensures a safe and effective tonsillectomy using modern methods that reduce bleeding and promote faster healing. The surgery can significantly improve quality of life by reducing infections, improving breathing during sleep, and eliminating chronic throat problems.

Tonsillectomy is a time-tested and reliable solution for children and adults suffering from persistent tonsil-related issues.

Surgery for Sleep Apnoea

Surgical treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) is recommended when lifestyle changes and non-surgical options like CPAP therapy are ineffective or not tolerated. Sleep apnoea occurs when the upper airway becomes blocked during sleep, causing pauses in breathing, snoring, and disturbed sleep, which can lead to daytime fatigue, high blood pressure, and serious heart complications.

Surgical options are tailored to the patient’s specific anatomy and severity of OSA. Common procedures include:

  • Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP): Removal of excess tissue from the soft palate and throat.
  • Tonsillectomy/Adenoidectomy: Especially effective in children where enlarged tonsils or adenoids are the primary cause.
  • Septoplasty and Turbinoplasty: Correct nasal obstruction contributing to mouth breathing and snoring.
  • Genioglossus Advancement: Moves the tongue muscle forward to prevent airway collapse.
  • Maxillomandibular Advancement (MMA): Repositions the upper and lower jaw to enlarge the airway space.
  • Inspire Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulation (implant-based therapy): For select patients with moderate to severe OSA.

Before considering surgery, a thorough evaluation is done, including sleep studies, nasal endoscopy, and airway imaging. Dr. Abhishek S. performs these surgeries with precision, focusing on airway optimization, minimal discomfort, and faster recovery.

Surgery for sleep apnoea can significantly improve sleep quality, reduce snoring, and lower long-term health risks. It is a valuable solution for patients seeking a permanent improvement in their breathing and sleep health.
